When is the Wedding?

Wedding Reception Ideas

This list began as a collection of Baptist wedding reception ideas, but the list is really for anyone. Some venues have rules against serving alcohol, some places prohibit dancing, and some couples just want to add something a bit different whether or not dancing and alcohol are also included. We hope this list will help you think of creative reception ideas that truly reflect the unique personalities of you and your beloved.

Time Capsule

An activity that can bring years of enjoyment is to start a family time capsule at your wedding. Guests can bring newspaper clippings, photographs, or other memories to be placed into the capsule. You can also provide guests with materials to create messages for you to read later. Be sure to add something to the time capsule for your new spouse and for yourself. Lock the time capsule and keep it closed until your first anniversary. If you choose, you can make your time capsule into a family tradition that you add new items to and open on designated anniversaries (such as your 1st, 5th, 10th, 15th, and so on).

Open Ice Cream Bar

Ice Cream Flavors If you do not plan on serving alcohol (or just want something fun) but would still like to give your guests the opportunity to select their own refreshments, consider having an open ice cream bar. Provide a variety of flavors and have both cones and bowls for guests to choose from. For drinks, ice cream floats can also be available. The open ice cream bar works any time of the year, but it goes over especially well for summer-time weddings. Adults and children alike enjoy the ice cream selections.

Photo Guest Book

Guests writing notes to new couple As your guests arrive at the reception have friends take their pictures and give them empty scrapbook pages. Provide your guests with colorful pens, stickers, and other items to decorate their page with. Be sure your guests are instructed to leave a place on the page for their photo to be added (if you use Poloroids or have the pictures printed at the reception your guests can attach their own pictures). This activity is a great way to keep your guests entertained while they await the arrival of the wedding party. In the end, you will also have a personalized photo book made by everyone who attended your wedding reception.

Cake and Punch

Pink three-tier cake Looking for a simple reception? The cake and punch reception is one of the simplest and yet most traditional types of wedding receptions. These receptions are commonly held mid-afternoon and involve serving of cake, punch, and sometime a few additional snacks or hor d'oeuvres. Toasts (if any) are usually made with either punch or sparkling grape juice, but alcohol is sometimes used. The reception provides enough time for guests to congratulate the new couple, enjoy cake, and mingle. Generally, these receptions last for about one to two hours and will sometimes include additional activities.
